In 2009, The Rochester Metropolitan Jazz Orchestra formalized its mission and registered in New York State as a non-profit organization. The orchestra's goals are:
(1) To promote musical appreciation in the community - The Rochester Metropolitan Jazz Orchestra performs a historical and contemporary big band jazz repertoire in concerts at public venues throughout western New York State.
(2) To promote musical education for people of all ages - The Rochester Metropolitan Jazz Orchestra sponsors master classes and lectures by music professionals and educators.
(3) To provide theoretical and practical instruction in music and music performance - The Rochester Metropolitan Jazz Orchestra meets regularly where community musicians learn jazz big band repertoire in a structured rehearsal setting.
